The Indigo Stone by Simone Snaith

Magic mixes with steampunk in this very readable fantasy adventure.

The protagonist is Eine, a homeless young woman living on the streets in the city of Thela. The city is enslaved by the mysterious Indigo, who are killing anyone of Laxen blood. And Eine is half-Laxen. But her life changes when she runs into a foreign spy and helps him escape the city. She travels with him to the world outside, where magic-wielding Laxens live alongside non-magical humans, and joins the fight to free Thela from the Indigo.

The story starts strongly, but fails to live up to its early promise though the setting offers an interesting mix of magic with steam trains and airships.

The writing is very readable throughout though there are a few editing errors.
