The Crystal Mountain by J. Gregory Smith

Sibling rivalry leads to trouble in this fantasy adventure targeted at younger readers.

When weedy youngster Dale gets to be King instead of his older brother Erik, Erik is naturally miffed. He wants his throne and is willing to deal with the country’s longstanding enemies to get it. Meanwhile, Dale has bonded with a magical glowing Guardian from the Crystal Mountain, which gives him superhuman strength and stamina, and he’s learning how to be King. Which will all be useful when the country’s invaded.

The writing is a bit dull but well-edited with few errors. Characterization is good. The plot’s not too exciting though it picks up towards the end.
