Spoils of War by Christopher Holliday

A soldier fighting on an alien planet realises he hasn’t been told the whole truth in this high-quality military science fiction short story.

This story has previously been published in an anthology and has won an award, so as you might expect, it’s extremely well written with no annoying editing errors. It’s military science fiction, but the focus is on the characters and their situation rather than hardware or gore. The narrative is in first person from the point of view of a protagonist who I don’t think is ever named.

My only complaint would be that the conclusion is rather gloomy, but that’s just my personal preference. I like upbeat endings.

The author has published a number of science fiction short stories on Kindle Unlimited, and I expect all are well worth reading.
