Spirit of Magik by Richard Cluff

A noble young lady with a penchant for murder needs to marry to hold on to her position, and luckily for her a handsome, naive young man comes along at just the right time.

This is a bit of a doorstopper and really not well written. But from the opening scene where psychopathic wizard Ari murders her abusive father and step-mother, I was absolutely hooked. It is long, but there’s no tedious description or history lessons, just romping plot from start to finish.

The plot needs to be good, because the writing has some obvious problems. There are lots of editing errors, rather too many colons, semi-colons, exclamation marks, and SHOUTING!!! As long as you can ignore all that, it’s very readable. The world seems well thought out and there’s an interesting ghost-powered magic system, which is something I haven’t seen before.

This is a Book 1, and obviously so, with plenty unresolved at the end, but it concludes in a reasonably satisfactory way.

Expect a good deal of swearing, sexual references, and bloody violence including rape.
