As Gods Take Steps by J Fitzpatrick Mauldin

A young man’s blasphemous curiosity sends him on a journey of discovery.

Young Tungui tries to climb one of the monumental stone gods his people worship, which gets him into trouble and when their town is lost to invaders his blasphemy is obviously to blame. As the displaced tribe cross the desert to find sanctuary among foreigners with strange beliefs, Tungui gains new insight into his own culture.

With few editing errors, this is a very readable, thoughtful story. Though short, it’s an enjoyable read. I felt the ending was weak but YMMV.
