A Darker Shade of Sorcery by William Collins

If you like Harry Potter but feel it would be better with more fights and brain splatter, this one’s for you.

Bullied orphan Evan is attacked by demons and dragged off to another world. He’s rescued and taken off to demon-hunting school to learn how to fight demons with swords and magic. Unfortunately, the demons are still after him.

This book is packed to the gills with humour and inventive fantasy. Any number of worlds, every race and creature imaginable, magic as well as technology. It’s exhausting to contemplate and doesn’t make for any coherent world-building, but it is tremendous fun. The characters are pretty good and the plot hangs together well enough.

Formatting and editing could be better; I spotted a number of errors. The writing is very readable throughout and often good, though there is some thesaurus abuse in evidence.

Expect a lot of over-the-top violence and gore, mainly directed against demons. A bit of romance, no sex.
