The Beggar Prince by JB Drake

Streetwise Marshalla and innocent kleptomaniac Tip fall foul of the wrong wizard and his scheming son.

Marshalla just wants to earn enough money to get them both off the streets, but powerful men have other plans for little Tip, who seems to have a mysterious magic power. Meanwhile, others want to help them (though none too successfully), and without telling them why (for some reason).

Kids-in-peril usually makes for an engaging plot, and this is an enjoyable adventure with lots of magic and skullduggery befalling the main characters. While the plot’s a bit unfocused, it’s readable fun stuff. This is labelled as book 1 of a series and that’s very much how it reads, with a lot left unexplained at the end, but there’s enough meat to make it a satisfying standalone read.
