Aftan Whispers by Phil Williams

In a dystopian city, a boy tries to help a girl on the run who may hold the key to changing the world.

When naive young Tyler sees a girl fleeing slavers, he can’t resist trying to help her. She’s running from the authorities who want the results of her murdered master’s last experiment. They look for the data together while evading the bad guys.

I felt this started rather slowly. The characters think a lot, their goals are rather vague, and the plot plods along. However, the cloud-covered, rickety high-rise city is a nicely atmospheric setting, the well-edited writing is very readable throughout, and it does improve as the action warms up.
